i i Academy Survives First 100 Years With Difficulty Memphis, (INS)-One Memphis' favorite citizens is 100 years old plus and is hale and hearty despite the rigors of war, epidemics, fire and children's antics that have enlivened her long life. She is St. Agnes Academy, established a century ago as a "school for females." The services rendered the community by the academy has caused Memphians to consider the school as much alive as the 1700 girls who have graduated from the institution. St. Agnes owes her esixtence Father Thomas Grace, O.
pastor of St. Peter's church. In 1850 he appealed to the Mother House of St. Dominic in Ken- tucky to establish a girls' school in Memphis. request was granted.
On New Year's six nuns arrived by steamboat' in Mernphis to found St. Agnes Academy. In a newspaper advertisem*nt dated Jan. 27, 1851, the sisters promised that the establishment "will be permanent." They announced they 'planned to present a system of education "calculated to secure all the aims of education--moral and intellectual culture, refinement of manners and physical improvement."
