My first time participating at #ECO2024 has been a humbling experience. I admitted to myself and others from the beginning that I was not up to date with #obesity #evidence. As an MD it can be difficult to admit this but it is the first step to improving care for patients.Obesity evidence is constantly evolving, and although there are still many questions there are also very clear messages from the researchers who have dedicated decades to this. My objective is to go back to Luxembourg and put in place actions that will help prevent obesity and provide the best chances for people who live with obesity. Thank you to the patients I spoke to who, with patience and kindness, explained to me what obesity is.Thank you to the researchers that are taking us into the future of obesity prevention and treatment. Finally, thank you to the directors at Luxembourg Health Directorate - Direction de la santé Dr Juliana D'Alimonte Dr Jean-Claude Schmit and Xavier Poos for supporting me and my department to access the best evidence in order to put in place effective national health policies.

Excellent session on Obesity and Cancer by Philipp Scherer at #ECO2024 He explained the mechanisms through which #adipocytes increase tumor growth. This is key for #cancer prevention.I will discuss including this evidence in the work we are doing with the Institut National du Cancer - INC on the next report on cancer for Luxembourg with Nikolai Goncharenko I will also look to include these factor risks in our cancer screening programmes to better understand the population’s preventative needs at Luxembourg Health Directorate - Direction de la santé

If you were wondering when is the best time to intervene to reduce overweight (if you had to choose only one but of course anytime is good) I have the answer.Preconception. Evidence presented at #ECO2024 shows that weight of the mother at conception has an impact on the risk of babies to suffer from #obesity in the future. BUT fathers are not off the hook, there is also evidence that shows that #epigenetics have a role: spermatozoa from overweight and obese fathers sense the environment and double the risk of a child having obesity independent of maternal weight.I am putting in place the new Programme on Obesity Prevention at Luxembourg Health Directorate - Direction de la santé that will be led by Anne Marx with the objective of preventing obesity and creating the opportunities and environment that hinder the impact of this disease on patients. All this evidence we are gathering will be informing our #actions. Watch this space!

Phenotyping Obesity beyond BMIBMI is usually the first data looked at when assessing a patient’s weight. However it is not a good indicator for body composition or adipose impact. Age, sex and distribution of fat need to be considered. Inflammation markers need to be taken into consideration. Premenopausal women have more subcutaneous fat and lower localisation body fat with a higher sensitivity to insulin which are protectors to cardiometabolic disease for example.Drug treatment of chronic disease in patients with obesity is increasing their longevity but ignoring the fact that they will not cure the root cause. Thank you to presenters of this session at #ECO2024 for highlighting the importance of #preventing #obesity.

I strongly believe Behavioural and Cultural Insights #BCI with its COM-B model and Tailoring Health Programmes #THP approach helps develop more effective health policies. With the support of Katrine Bach Habersaat and her team at WHO Regional Office for Europe, my colleagues and I were able to deliver our first BCI #capacity building workshop at the Luxembourg Health Directorate - Direction de la santé Thanks to Lieser Sandra , Jane Murray , Anne Marx and Marina Bredimus-Clement for their help delivering this training. Today is Occupational Health Day.Did you know that Menopausal women are the fastest-growing demographic in the workforce, so it’s important now more than ever to be able to speak openly about #menopause at #work. The management of #gender-specific health issues other than pregnancy are rarely discussed in the workplace.I’ve seen how menopause has affected colleagues of mine, usually women in their professional prime that after much effort got to the dreamed executive positions. Receiving the right support makes such a difference!https://lnkd.in/dC4APqW5

It can take up to two years to see the benefits of cycling and walking schemes, however the positive impact on health are well worth the wait.#environment #GIMB #healthyliving
