Liberian soldier pays a shoe shine boy for shining his boots in Monrovia Liberia, West Africa. I accompanied my sister, Marian Athrea Williams, who was a former Peace Corp volunteer, to Liberia.I was there for 3 weeks. It was the third African country I had visited. I traveled from Monrovia Liberia in the back of a pickup truck to Yekepa Liberia located on the border of Guinea. Samuel Kanyon Doe(6 May 1951– 9 September 1990) took power in a popular rebellion in 1980 against the Liberian Government, becoming the first Liberian President of nonAmerico-Liberiandescent. Doe established a military regime called thePeople's Redemption Counciland enjoyed support from Liberian ethnic groups who were denied power since the founding of the Liberia. Doe's rule was characterized bytotalitarianism, corruption, and hisfavoritismtowards ethnicKrahns, which led to growing opposition to his regime from the Liberian public and the United States. TheFirst Liberian Civil Warbegan in December 1989 when the anti-DoeNational Patriotic Front of Liberia(NPFL) led byCharles Taylorinvaded Liberia from theIvory Coastto overthrow him. Doe was captured and executed byPrince Johnsonon 9 September 1990.WikipediaPhotograph by Milton Williams © 12.18.1983.

From Black DC Streets to CHIEFS SEAT book back cover Text.As a Black youth growing up on the streets of Washington, DC, a career in law enforcement was the furthest thing from Clarence Edwards’s mind. In From DC Streets to Chief's Seat, Edwards shares his journey from his teenage years on the streets to becoming the chief of police in Montgomery County, MD. Edwards recounts stories of how preparation, performance, and perseverance were integral to the growth and development of his resilience, which he credits for his personal and professional success. Edwards emphasizes the importance of designing programs that foster resilience in those preparing for careers in law enforcement. Such a commitment, Edwards argues, will yield myriad benefits, including reducing protests and calls to defund or eliminate the police. To that end, he shares insights into best practices for hiring, training, and supervising candidates for careers in law enforcement; educating police recruits on the true mission and history of policing in the United States; providing opportunities for police recruits to interact with and listen to the concerns of people in the communities before their law enforcement training begins; the importance of non-bias training throughout a police officer’s career; and effective methods for monitoring and disciplining police officers’ behavior. From DC Streets to Chief's Seat is a must-read for anyone concerned about reducing friction among police and minorities, especially elected officials overseeing police, law enforcement officials, and tenured personnel.………………………………………………………………“Chief Clarence Edwards has crafted a colorful narrative of personal and professional remembrance.A proud product of Black D. C., Edwards recounts the lessons of community and family he absorbed as the foundation for a career in a law enforcement system he knew would be strewn with the obstacles and challenges for a Black man.Filled with the accolated anecdote wisdom, Edwards takes the reader on a journey through Black D. C. as well as the upper reaches of U. S. law enforcement.”- Dr. David Harris: Emeritus Managing Director of the Charles Hamilton Houston Institute for Race and Justice at Harvard Law School. Enclosed is a photo by me of our resident Owl. It was attempting to kill our resident squirrel who ran across our deck screen two weeks ago. The squirrel survived, our screen didn’t. I opened our deck door when I happened to see the deck light on. When I opened the door, it saw me it flew all over our deck into the various screened sections of our deck trying to get away from me. When it couldn’t fly away, it just perched itself on a overturned rocking chair and just looked at me. That’s when I took the enclosed photo. It flew through the deck door when I walked around and opened the deck door. We had the entire deck screens replaced. The cost was $2100.00 dollars. There’s also a pair of Eagles nested in a ten-story tree; a family of foxes and plenty of deer behind our home. I have photographed deer in groups of 5-7 on our front and rear lawns day and night. They have no shame when it comes to eating off our lawn. Photograph by Milton Williams © 2.29.2024
